“The Skagwood Seven” was composed by One Eye the Mouse, the only serviving member of Battle Mother’s war party.
Webbers weave and poets write
Scholars give their own insight
Troubadours will sing away
Strumming out a ancient lay
Some of war and some of woe
Some of joy and mirth also
Some of treachery and guile
Or of things ignored a while
Battle Mother it was said
Never should be struck down dead
Ere her final drop was bled
She would take her killer’s head
None had come to humbly aid
The Skagwood folk of dim glade
Pleading with the Grindom Men
Hoping for their homes again
But Grindom men broad and tall
Rarely care to help the small
The Skagwood folk could not buy
Even one who cared to try
‘Til they knocked upon the door
And found the great dwarf of yore
She of whom this song is sung
Warrior Queen of Dammerung
She heard tales of hordid brood
Spider Mother’s multitude
Wearing armor axe in hand
She left her child spouse and land
She gathered up six in all
Warrior to fight kill and maul
The invading spider horde
Quartered now across the ford
One Eye the Mouse, Jug the Bard
Lock the hauflin, Snout the Guard
Gorse the Frog, Dog Beauty too
All became friends brave and true
Skagwood was as black as night
Wrapped in webs that blocked the light
Not a ray of light came through
Every step was derring do
Victory was not their lot
But still they went forth and fought
Little folk defend their own
Stand as one or die alone
Jug the bard ceased a song
Trampled to bits by the throng
Lock the hauflin pulled her knife
Virtue found, she lost her life
Snout the Guard who left his home
Fell to rest, no more to roam
Gorse’s clever trap was sprung
From the tree his body hung
Dog Beauty’s dear parting words
“Live by looks and die by swords”
One Eye fell to spider bites
She should have died by all rights
At last there was left but one
Warrior Queen of Dammerung
Poisoned, bound, bloodied, and caught
To Spider Queen she was brought
Spider Mother grinned and laughed
Took a spear and stabbed the shaft
Into the heart of her foe
Battle Mother’s blood did flow
Battle Mother it was said
Never should be struck down dead
Ere her final drop was bled
She would take her killer’s head
Her eyes shot wide, muscles tensed
She flung spiders backs against
Stone and tree soldier and spear
Death and revenge shock and fear
Swinging foes like morning stars
Ignoring pain and battle scars
She slaughtered all in her way
Battle Mother fighting fey
Clobbering the Spider Queen
The wood’s floor was painted green
Spider’s legs and bodies heaped
High as the trees vengeance reaped
Her breathing slowed the spell passed
Battle Mother fell at last
Enemies slain war was done
Cut down the webs see the sun
Victory was not their lot
But still they went forth and fought
Little folk defend their own
Stand as one or die alone
Ponder in your heart now of
Dwarven sacrificial love
Giving all that one can give
Deing so that others live
Let not her deeds go unsung
Warrior Queen of Dammerung
Recognize the Skagwood Six
Floating down the River Styx
One left to live
One still to die
One Eye the Mouse
One eye to cry
